I am urging you to stop the glorification of busy. I’m declaring this an epidemic!

Let’s do a quick check in. When someone asks how you’ve been what is your response? Was it possibly one of these common answers I’ve been hearing?

  • “Busy, but good”
  • “Busy, in a good way”
  • “Keeping busy”
  • “Trying to stay busy”

Side Note: I’m not perfect, I’ve used these answers from time to time. But I realize that it is a very canned answer and there is no authenticity present when I answer this way.

“Busy” at it’s best is getting in the way of working on what matters and seeing any progress. At it’s worse “busy” is keeping us stressed out, sick, and grumpy.

It just takes a second. To stop the glorification of busy all you have to do is take a quick second and complete these 2 steps:

Step 1 – Breathe

Step 2 – Say what you really mean

What is possible if you said what you really meant? Instead of the canned answer “busy” what if you replied:

  • “Amazing I am in the middle of a huge project that I love”
  • “I’m working to prioritize so that I have more time for myself”
  • “I’ve got new responsibilities in my job/business/career and I’m learning to manage it all”
  • “ I’m trying to answer with anything but busy right now, and I can’t think of anything. Maybe I need to take a break.”

What impact could you have when you stop glorifying “busy” and shared with your friends, family, and colleges what’s really going on? I see it as opening the door for support, compassion, authentic connection, and ending this “busy” epidemic.

Will you commit to giving it a try this week? All it takes is 1 second and 2 steps. Let’s work together to empower authentic connection and end the glorification of busy!
